Sarnia Zellers closing Thursday
Bargain hunters have only three more days to score a deal at the Sarnia Zellers store.
The department store closes its doors Thursday.
Inside the store today what was left of the merchandise was moved to the front third of the store with prices marked down between 75 and 90 percent on almost everything including the racks the remaining clothing is still hanging on.
Senior manager of external communications for HBC – the parent company of Zellers – Tiffany Bourne, says the Sarnia store is one of many which will close on Thursday. The remaining of the approximately 100 Zellers across Canada which were not sold to Target will close March 30th. There will only be three Zellers stores left in Canada, one each in Toronto, Montreal and White Rock, BC.
Bourne says most of the inventory will be sold off before the doors close. “The deals up to the 14th actually get better and better and better,” says Bourne. “The majority of the inventory is sold through the consumer liquidation process.” Whatever is not sold will be sold through another liquidation process.
The fixtures of the store, including the 50’s-themed restaurant, are also on the block. “It’s a great opportunity to own a little nostalgia,” she says.
While HBC doesn’t release staffing numbers, Bourne says a typical Zellers employed about 100 people when fully staffed. She says the number of people now working at the London Road store would be decreasing as the inventory moved out. Some workers will stay on a couple weeks after the Sarnia location closes to clean out the store.
And Bourne expects there will be customers in the store until the very last day. “People do come on the last day looking for the best bargains,” she says.
