Petrolia nursing home ready to hire 50
Fiddick’s Nursing Home hopes to hire 50 people as it prepares to open an expansion at its Petrolia home.
The $12 million, 62-bed addition is just about complete and officials are planning a job fair to hire the employees to staff it.
Lambton College’s Employment and Learning Centre on Oil Heritage Road will have two job fairs, March 26 from 1 to 4 pm and March 27 from 1 to 7 pm to find registered practical nurses, dietary aides, personal support workers, as well as housekeeping and laundry workers.
Deb Churcher of Fiddick’s says it is rare to hire this many people at one time. “The only time you generally see that is with an expansion or new build,” says Churcher.
Churcher is confident there will be a good pool of potential employees. “The thing that is going to attract a lot of people is there are people out there working two or three part-time or casual jobs,” she says. “The fact that we’re offering full-time and permanent part-time will attract people.”
Churcher says Fiddick’s prefers to hire permanent employees because it is “better for the resident care. It’s something we’ve always done.”
Churcher says Lambton College will be screening the applicants and Fiddick’s will be also talking to the people at the job fair. She adds the new employees won’t all be starting right away.
“Some of the new employees will start within three to four weeks and the others will start in July.”
The nursing home plans an open house in the fall to celebrate the expansion.
