End of a cleaning era

Stepping into K&M Cleaners in Sarnia is like turning back the clock to a time when everyone wore a suit to work with a freshly dry-cleaned shirt. Bob Gordon has owned the business for 51 years, building the current location on Indian Road over 40 years ago. It will close at the end of April as Gordon retires. He won’t sell his business since the equipment is old and can only be repaired with parts he makes. And Gordon says the demand for dry cleaning has decreased over the years because people don’t wear suits to work anymore. Five people will be out of work when the business closes April 29. With K&M Cleaners closure, there will be just three dry cleaners left in Sarnia, compared to nine in the 1960s.
