Canadian Coast launches new $21 million anti smuggling ship in Sarnia

It ‘s a rare event in the life of the Canadian Coast Guard. Officials commissioned the new Private Robertson V.C. in Sarnia today. It is the first of nine new Hero Class vessels meant to enhance marine security. The ships will be manned by the Coast Guard with officers from the RCMP and the municipal forces of Toronto and Niagara. The partnership is meant to crackdown on and deter smuggling and human trafficking.

The Private Robertson V.C. is named after Victoria Cross winner Pete Robertson who died while trying to save two wounded soldiers in the First World War while under severe fire on the fields in Passendale, Belgium Nov. 6, 1917.
