‘We won’ A Sarnia couple first son born just hours before Prince George
While the world waited for the birth of the future king of England, Eric and Laura Smit were reveling in the joy of becoming first time parents and beating Prince William and Princess Catherine to the punch.
While cameras were fixated on the wing of a London Hospital knowing Princess Catherine was in labour, friends and family were ribbing Eric on Facebook about the possibility their first child would be born on the same day as the royal heir.
“I’m not really a royal person,” Smit told Sarnia-Lambton This Week “but people brought it up all the time that we were probably going to have our baby at the same time.”
Even Smit’s sister got in on the act, posting on Facebook “The race is on between the Royal Family and the Smit Family” and later texting her brother saying “the Royal Family is winning, Kate is going into labour.”
By then, Cole had already made his entry into the world and Eric was quite pleased to rub it in a little texting “We just had our baby. We won.”
Laura says family and friends are delighted with Cole’s birth and it’s special meaning. “My Grandma is quite happy because she’ll never forget his birthday.”
Smit says the first few days as parents has been a bit of a blur and he hasn’t really taken time to consider how the two boys, born on the same day a continent apart, will have such different lives saying while Prince George Alexander Louis may live in all the trappings of the modern monarcy, “We’re pretty blessed; he should do okay.”
And while Smit is sure there will be lots of loving hands to take care of his son, he does expect he and Laura will have “less support” than the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will noting they’ll never have to scramble to find a babysitter.
And since the Smits are more experienced parents than Will and Kate, if only by a few hours, we asked what advice he might have for the Royal Couple. “Based on what I’ve seen so far, do your best to get some sleep when you can.”
Meantime, Eric is hoping to get a memento of Cole’s birth day. In Britian, children born on the same day as Prince George will be receiving a special penny made of silver to mark the occasion. Smit would like to see if the offer extends to members of the Commonwealth, too.
