Former mayor honoured as Senior of the Year

Enniskillen Township Mayor Kevin Marriott presents former mayor, Larry O’Neill, with the 2013 Senior of the Year award for his work with the citizens group CORE.

Saying Enniskillen Township wouldn’t be what it is today without his leadership, Mayor Kevin Marriott named former mayor Larry O’Neill 2013 Senior of the Year.

The current municipal council presented O’Neill with the award for his work with the grassroots anti-wind turbine group CORE – Conserve Our Rural Enniskillen. The well-respected 70 year old joined the group after agents began canvassing local farmers trying to get them to sign leases for industrial wind turbines.

Marriott says O’Neill was one of many people who helped galvanize the community and lead council to take a strong stand against the four companies proposing projects in the rural community. A number of the companies have backed away from their projects.

“CORE…really has made its mark because we can sit here in a wind turbine-free area,” said Marriott as he presented O’Neill with the certificate in his backyard.

And while the award is to honour O’Neill’s current work in the community, it is clear, Marriott says, O’Neill has made his mark on Enniskillen.

“It is a honour for me to present this to you – I can’t say that enough because the township would not be what it is today without your hard work,” Marriott told O’Neill. “We often think about your hard work, especially the work you did on the water system when we sit around the council table. Life is easier in Enniskillen because of you.”
